A Supplement to
Creating Broader Impact: The Bush Foundation Fellowships—
How Individuals Contribute to the Strength of Communities, Institutions, and Fields
The Bush Foundation commissioned a combined study of its three fellowship programs—Bush Artist Fellows, Bush Leadership Fellows, and Bush Medical Fellows—to assess the role of fellowships as a strategy to strengthen communities and fulfill the Foundation’s mission “to improve the quality of life in our region through strengthening organizational, community, and individual leadership.” Creating Broader Impact: The Bush Foundation Fellowships is available online in PDF format; paper copies are available on request from the Foundation.
An online supplement to the fellowship report provides results of survey research conducted by 4 Seasons Research as part of the study. The study also included in-depth interviews with fellows and community observers of their work, conducted by Wilder Research Center, as well as a review of other fellowship programs, interviews with philanthropic and evaluation specialists and other informants, and a literature review. Susan Showalter and Vicki Itzkowitz directed the study.
The study focused on the nearly 600 individuals who received Bush fellowships between 1990 and 2002. About half of fellows completed the confidential survey. The margin of error was 6.3 percent at the 95 percent confidence level.
The supplement in PDF format includes survey results—across all three fellowship programs and for each program individually—in the following areas:
